Westvaco FRIS
Landmark assisted in the completion of a forest resource information system (FRIS) for Westvaco Corporation in the Parkersburg, Elkins, and Rupert Divisions. This project encompassed approximately 180,000 acres. The FRIS inventory project was designed to help determine long-term goals for the Westvaco Corporation. Landmarks role in this project was to supply accurate data to Westvaco in timber inventory, stand analysis, GPS data collection, and highly accurate field map work. The timber inventory consisted of taking sample plots and points in the field. On each plot or point taken, all trees were tallied including diameters, heights and cull portions of each tree. Also the forest type, sight index, ground cover, aspect and terrain were recorded. These records are then used to break up the tract into different stands for future management of the timberland. The GPS data collection is used for proper road placement and to record the exact location of inventory plots and or points. This information taken in the field allows Westvaco personnel to successfully create a forest management plan that will keep a sustainable supply of forest products on their land holdings.
Ohio Edison Carbon Sequestration Project
A management plan on approximately 6,500 acres of land owned by Ohio Edison Company (OEC) in both Ohio and Pennsylvania was completed in June and July of 1995. This project was initiated to determine if managed forestlands would sequester more carbon dioxide than if left unmanaged. Landmark performed the inventory work under the guidance of Dr. Harry V. Wiant and Dr. Ray Hicks. Landmark is currently performing some of the silvicultural work recommended in this plan. About 2.6 million board feet of timber has been marked and sold for OEC.
Contractual Forest Management Services
Landmark provides professional forest management services on approximately 152,000 acres in Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky. A satellite office in Charleston, West Virginia handles routine work in southern WV and KY. A satellite office in Parkersburg was initiated in 2003 to better serve our western WV and OH clients. Tract inspections, timber sales, boundary line maintenance, mapping, GPS location of boundaries, roads and sale boundaries, and the maintenance of a Geographical Information System are a part of the services that are performed on a daily basis for these clients.
